I can’t even imagine our Facebook community page. Fighting between data companies and cities and homeowner associations would make typical Republican versus Democrat fighting look like child’s play." Niche Layer vs. Hyperscale Replacement

Experts largely agree that home data centers are far more likely to become a niche layer within future digital infrastructure rather than a wholesale replacement for hyperscale data centers. Sean Farney of JLL notes the impressive computational power available in everyday devices, stating, "your smartphone has more computing capacity than the first data center ever built." He believes that while competing with a hyperscaler’s operational efficiency is challenging due to the expense of maintaining a super distributed footprint, the company that successfully scales this model could achieve a substantial valuation.

Sviat Dulianinov, Chief Strategy Officer of Bright Machines, remains skeptical about the broader viability of residential compute replacing industrial-scale infrastructure. He argues, "Infrastructure for AI isn’t infrastructure for crypto. You don’t run data centers in basements." Dulianinov stresses that modern AI relies on "AI factories" – thousands of GPUs working in concert, demanding complex engineering, precision manufacturing, tightly integrated supply chains, and industrial-scale power and cooling. While compute will undeniably move closer to the edge, he posits it will be via "standardized, engineered systems versus crowdsourced home data centers."
